Eye Irritation from Droopy Eyelids: Causes & Treatment

Now that I’m in my 70s, I understand that it’s normal for skin to change and become less firm than it used to be. However, I often felt like the eyelid was rubbing against my eyes. This somehow led to eye irritation.

At first, I didn’t care about it and thought that I could just leave it alone. But over time, it started to affect my daily life. I found myself rubbing my eyes very often. When I was exposed to bright light, I usually experienced eye irritation. Eventually, I realized that leaving it untreated may not be a good idea. That’s why I decided to discuss this problem with my family to find the solution.

My daughter helped me search for information on places to get double eyelid surgery. Since I’m getting older, choosing a reliable clinic with experienced ophthalmologists is important to me. She spent quite a while before taking me to Lovely Eye & Skin Clinic. I consulted Dr. Mina Lovely Eye (Dr. Mina Naratippakorn, M.D. Medical License No. 43109) regarding the causes and treatment options.

Eye Irritation Due to Droopy Eyelids: How did the Doctor Evaluate It?

BASELINE EYE 6/2/26

Before Lovely Blepharoplasty Signature, Ptosis Surgery, Lower Blepharoplasty, Lower Eyelid Pulling

After consulting Dr. Mina, I learned that eye irritation I had been experiencing was due to Entropion. This condition commonly occurs as we age, especially those with droopy upper eyelids or eyelid tendons. As a result, eyelashes will fold and point toward the eyes. If left untreated, it may contribute to corneal abrasion.

For treatment, lower eyelid pulling is recommended. It helps tighten the lower eyelid tendon around the outer corner of the eye, which minimizes risks of ectropion in the future. For lower eyelids, I decided to have lower blepharoplasty. This is something I had been considering all the time. The reason was that my under eye bags became even more noticeable, making my face appear tired and less refreshed.

At first, I planned to go for lower eyelid surgery only, as that was my main concern. However, during the evaluation, Dr. Mina also examined the overall eye structure and found that my upper eyelids were quite droopy and saggy with age. Moreover, my left eye appeared slightly smaller than the right one.

She recommended me undergoing double eyelid surgery to make both eyes balanced. Another procedure was ptosis surgery to correct weakened eyelid muscle. It helps lift upper eyelids, allowing me to open my eyes fully. This would result in a more lively appearance. My daughter was very supportive. She encouraged me to address all concerns in one go.

How was Your Experience on the Surgery Day

On the surgery day, I was so excited, but also nervous whether it would be painful. However, I tried to put my mind at ease. I also kept telling myself that everything would be fine. Therefore, I was able to address eye irritation that had been bothering me for so long, while also improving the appearance of my eyes.

While I was waiting to enter the operating room, the staff chatted with me to make me feel relaxed. Dr. Mina told me not to worry about the pain, as there would be anesthesia injection 30 minutes before surgery. Overall, it took a little over two hours, as there were various procedures to be performed.

After leaving the operating room, the staff provided self-care instructions after double eyelid surgery, including precautions to take, how long to apply cold and warm compress, how to massage the surgical areas, how long to apply ointment, and what types of food to avoid as they may affect wound healing. I kept following all instructions, because I wanted the incisions to heal as soon as possible. Dr. Mina explained that my recovery might take longer compared to younger patients. For me, this was not a major concern. I could just simply take time to rest and recover.

How were the Results After Eyelid Surgery?

LOVELY EYE 9 DAYS 15/2/26

9 days after surgery, my daughter took me back to Lovely Eye & Skin Clinic again to have stitches removed. The staff were just as friendly and attentive as they were on the surgery day. Overall, the surgical incisions were dry. I was advised to avoid washing my face and stop applying ointment for another 3 days.

In my opinion, my eyelids were still swelling. However, the staff who removed my stitches reassured me that it was normal, as it hadn’t been that long since the surgery day. Continuing to apply warm compress would help reduce swelling. The most noticeable result was that my under eye bags appeared less puffy. I was happy that at least I could see some improvements in how I looked.

LOVELY EYE 1 MONTH 16/3/26

It’s been a month since surgery, I feel that both eyelid creases appear more balanced. This allows my eyes to open fully, as eyelids no longer droop like they used to be. I am impressed with the results. Furthermore, the eye irritation I had before started to improve. This condition no longer interferes with my daily life. For the final result, it will take around 3 to 6 months for incisions to heal completely. I will share another update with you once the results have fully settled.

If you keep experiencing eye irritation, it is recommended to consult a medical professional as soon as possible. Sometimes, the main problem may be related to the eye structure without realizing it until we have it evaluated by an ophthalmologist. I wish I had eyelid surgery and come across the Lovely Eye & Skin Clinic sooner. Otherwise, I would enjoy my life having vibrant eyes much earlier.
